Parents and children meet up a designated location and a predefined time. Everyone arrives with their own, functional bicycle (or other appropriate rolling vehicle).
Anyone that can't safely or easily join the group at the starting point is welcome to join the group later in the ride. Late joiners should join at the back of the bus as it passes.
Each group will have a leader who is responsible for ensuring everyone is prepared for the ride and leading the group through the prescribed route.
The Edison Bike Bus will target a speed of 6–7 miles per hour to accommodate cyclists of all ability. The group will likely spread out between stops.
At busy and/or dangerous intersections, the group leader will stop the front of the group to ensure everyone is at the intersection and ready to cross before proceeding.
Whenever possible, "Corkers" will assist the bus in crossing these intersections by blocking the road until the entire bike bus has passed. In the event the entire bus can not safely cross an intersection at once, the lead group will cross then stop and wait for any following groups before continuing on the route.
Some routes may have groups join from various localized spur locations.
Everyone participating in the Edison Bike Bus must agree to the Edison Bike Bus Liability Waiver and come prepared to have a fun, energetic, and safe ride!
The Edison Bike Bus will operate in the morning to help get kids safely to school. In the afternoon, parent/guardians are responsible for ensuring their child has transportation home.
The Edison Bike Bus is open to anyone in the community that would like to help children safely arrive at school.
Edison Elementary students in grades 3 and higher may be brought to the bus by their parent/guardian and then ride alone. Students in grades 2 and below must have a parent/guardian accompany throughout the ride.
Daily biking helps kids (and adults!) build lasting active habits that support lifelong health and well-being.
Research shows that kids who arrive at school via active transportaion are more focused, less stressed, and perform better academically. A morning ride sets the tone for a successful school day.
Fewer cars around the school means cleaner air and less traffic congestion. Riding together is a small step toward a healthier, more sustainable community.
There is safety in numbers. Riding together in an organized group increases visibility, reduces risks, and helps teach kids safe cycling practices.
Above all, the bike bus is fun! Kids and families get to connect with friends and neighbors while enjoying the ride to school.
